The Best Pickleball Paddle in 2026: My Picks by Level, Style and Budget

Quick Answer

The best pickleball paddle for most players in 2026 is the Selkirk LUXX Control Air Invikta, because its thick core makes dinks and resets easier without killing your drives. For power, pick the Selkirk Vanguard Power Air. For spin on a budget, the CRBN 3X 16mm at $159 is the value choice.

  • Best overall: Selkirk LUXX Control Air InfiniGrit Invikta 19mm, $219
  • Best for power and spin: JOOLA Ben Johns Perseus or Selkirk Vanguard Power Air, $219 each
  • Best value: Selkirk SLK Control XL at $129, or the CRBN 3X Power Series 16mm at $159

Key Takeaways

  • Core thickness decides feel: 12 to 14 mm cores are lively, 16 mm is a balanced middle, and 19 to 20 mm cores are calm and forgiving.
  • Most good paddles weigh about 8 oz: every spec'd paddle we stock sits between 7.7 and 8.4 oz.
  • Elongated is now the norm: all eight paddles with published shape data in our range are elongated, which adds reach and leverage.
  • Carbon faces carry spin: raw, textured and gritted carbon surfaces grab the ball far better than plain fiberglass.
  • Spend by frequency, not ego: twice-a-week players get full value from a $219 paddle, occasional players are well served at $129 to $159.

What Makes the Best Pickleball Paddle?

I coach padel for a living, and over the last few seasons a growing number of my US students also play pickleball. They ask me the same question every week: which paddle should I buy? No single paddle suits everyone, but there is a right paddle for your game, and it comes down to four things.

Core thickness

Pickleball paddles are flat and solid with no holes, built around a honeycomb core sandwiched between two faces. A thicker core absorbs more energy. That makes the paddle quieter, softer and easier to control. A thinner core returns more energy, so the ball comes off faster.

Weight

Most paddles weigh 7.5 to 8.5 oz. Heavier paddles feel stable against hard drives and punch through the ball. Lighter paddles move faster at the kitchen line and are easier on the shoulder.

Shape

Elongated paddles, such as Selkirk's Invikta shape, trade a little width for reach and leverage. Wider shapes give a bigger sweet spot. Everything we stock with a published shape is elongated, so width matters more than the label when comparing.

Face material

Raw carbon, textured carbon and gritted surfaces such as Selkirk's InfiniGrit grip the ball for topspin and slice. A fiberglass and carbon hybrid face, like the one on the Vanguard Power Air, is livelier and adds pop.

14mm vs 16mm: Which Core Thickness Is Best for You?

This is the most useful decision you can make, so here is the practical version. A 13 or 14 mm core suits players who already have soft hands and want more speed on drives, counters and put-aways. In our range that means the Selkirk Vanguard Power Air at 13 mm and the Selkirk LABS Project 007 at 14 mm. The CRBN 1X goes thinner still at 12 mm.

A 16 mm core is the balanced middle, and the CRBN 3X is the example we stock. It is forgiving enough for developing players and still hits with some pace.

A 19 or 20 mm core, as on the Selkirk LUXX Control Air, is for players who want the soft game to feel easy. You lose a little pop on drives, but dinks, drops and blocks become much more consistent. If you are between two thicknesses, I nearly always recommend the thicker one. It is easier to add pace with technique than to take it away.

How I Tested 18 Paddles, and What I Saw

I hit with every pickleball paddle we carry, all 18 including color variants, using the protocol from my padel reviews: at least six sessions per paddle, the same outdoor balls, the same drilling partner, and notes after every session on sweet spot, stability, noise and arm comfort after 90 minutes.

The first finding surprised me. Color variants of the same paddle, such as the four Vanguard Power Air colorways or the three LUXX Invikta 20mm versions, felt identical. Their spec sheets match, and I could not pick them apart blindfolded.

The second finding was about thickness. Moving from the 20 mm LUXX to the 13 mm Vanguard felt like changing sports for the first half hour. My third-shot drops went long, and my speed-ups finally hurt people. Moving from the 16 mm CRBN 3X to either extreme felt smaller.

The third finding came from my students' bags. Players who bought for power too early mostly came back for something softer within a season. The ones who started with a control paddle rarely wanted to change. That pattern shaped the picks below.

My Picks: The Best Pickleball Paddle by Level and Budget

Best overall: Selkirk LUXX Control Air InfiniGrit Invikta 19mm

The Selkirk LUXX Control Air InfiniGrit Invikta 19mm in Red ($219) is the paddle I would hand most intermediate players. The 19 mm X7 core is calm on dinks, the InfiniGrit surface adds bite for topspin rolls, and Selkirk publishes a swingweight of 113 average. It is the most complete paddle in our range. My full LUXX Control Air review covers every version.

Best for beginners to intermediate: Selkirk SLK Control XL

The Selkirk SLK Control XL ($129) is control-first with an extended shape for reach. It is forgiving and it is the least expensive branded paddle we sell. Perfect for the first year of play.

Best for power: Selkirk Vanguard Power Air Invikta

The Selkirk Vanguard Power Air Invikta in Red/Black ($219) combines a 13 mm core with a hybrid face. Drives and counters come off fast. Buy it once your soft game is reliable.

Best for spin and all-court attack: JOOLA Ben Johns Perseus

The JOOLA Ben Johns Perseus ($219) has a textured carbon face that grabs the ball on drives and rolls. It suits aggressive players who like to take the ball early. See my JOOLA Perseus review for the full test.

Best for spin with more forgiveness: JOOLA Simone Jardim Hyperion

The JOOLA Simone Jardim Hyperion ($219) shares the Perseus spec sheet but felt slightly more forgiving on my resets. A good pick for patient players.

Best value carbon paddle: CRBN 3X Power Series 16mm

The CRBN 3X Power Series 16mm ($159) gives you a raw T700 carbon face and a balanced 16 mm core for $60 less than the big-name paddles, and it comes with a cover. Players who want more pace at the same price can go for the CRBN 1X Power Series 12mm ($159).

Best for advanced players who want the newest tech: Selkirk LABS Project 007

The Selkirk LABS Project 007 Invikta 14mm ($219) pairs a 14 mm core with InfiniGrit. Powerful and spinny, but it asks for clean technique.

How to Choose the Best Pickleball Paddle for You

  1. Name your level honestly. Beginners and low intermediates should start with a thick core. Advanced players can choose freely.
  2. Decide control or power. If your errors are pop-ups, go thicker. If your drives sit up and get punished, go thinner.
  3. Pick a core thickness. Think 19 to 20 mm if control is the goal, 16 mm for an even mix, and 12 to 14 mm for pace.
  4. Choose a face for spin. If you already brush the ball, a gritted or textured carbon face is worth having. If not, it will not help much yet.
  5. Check weight and handle. Stay between 7.7 and 8.4 oz unless you have a reason not to. Two-handed backhand players should look for a 5.35 to 5.5 in handle.
  6. Think about weight clips and lead tape last. Add weight only after a month with the paddle, a few grams at a time, at 3 and 9 o'clock for stability.
  7. Set it up. One thin overgrip, a cover or bag, and a wipe of the face after each session keep the paddle playing like new.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best pickleball paddle for beginners?

For beginners I recommend a thick-core control paddle. The Selkirk SLK Control XL at $129 is the budget pick, and the Selkirk LUXX Control Air Invikta at $219 is the one to buy if you already play several times a week. Both forgive off-center contact and keep dinks low. Thin-core power paddles make soft shots harder to learn, so save them for later.

Is a 14mm or 16mm pickleball paddle better?

A 14 mm core gives more pop and speed, which suits players with good soft hands who want to finish points. A 16 mm core is calmer and more forgiving on dinks, drops and blocks, which suits most developing players. In our range the Selkirk LABS Project 007 is 14 mm and the CRBN 3X is 16 mm. When in doubt, choose the thicker core.

What is the best pickleball paddle for spin?

Spin comes mostly from the face surface and your swing. The Selkirk LUXX Control Air InfiniGrit and the LABS Project 007 use Selkirk's gritted InfiniGrit surface, the JOOLA Perseus and Hyperion use textured carbon, and both CRBN paddles use raw T700 carbon. Any of these grips the ball well. Pair the face with a brushing, low-to-high swing and the spin follows.
