Babolat Counter Viper Review: The Control Player's Viper

Quick Answer

The Babolat Counter Viper is the round-headed, control-focused member of the Viper family, and it is the right buy for players who defend well, build points patiently and still want a firm carbon face for putting balls away. The 2.6 2026 version is my favorite Babolat for left-side and all-court players who value placement over raw pace.

  • Best for: advanced control players, defensive left-side players and diamond users who keep framing lobs.
  • Weight / Balance / Shape: 2.6 2026 lists round shape, 355 - 375 g, high balance and a 3K carbon face.
  • Price at Padelnox: $219 for the 2024, $259 for the 2.5 2025 and $279 for the 2.6 2026.

Key Takeaways

  • Round shape, Viper firmness. The Counter Viper keeps the 3K carbon face and X-EVA core of a performance frame but moves the sweet spot lower and wider.
  • Three near-identical generations. The 2024, 2.5 2025 and 2.6 2026 share shape, weight range, face and core on paper; the 2.6 changes the surface to textured.
  • Rated for competition, not beginners. Every Counter Viper spec sheet says competition level; beginners should look at the Counter Veron instead.
  • High balance for a round frame. Babolat lists the balance as high, so it hits heavier than most round control rackets.
  • The 2024 is the value pick. At $219 it offers nearly the same spec as the 2.6 and still qualifies for the free Court-Ready Kit.

Six Weeks With the Babolat Counter Viper 2.6

Most of my career I have played on the left side, and I spend a lot of each match defending from the back glass before earning the chance to attack. That makes me exactly the player the Babolat Counter Viper is aimed at, so I was keen to spend real time with the 2.6 2026. Six sessions, same partner, fresh balls, and my regular teardrop in the bag for reference.

Session one: first feel. The spec sheet lists the balance as high, which surprised me for a round frame. In the hand it does feel more head-present than the round control rackets I usually hand to students, but it is nowhere near the weight-up-top sensation of a Technical Viper. It felt stable from the first ball.

Session two: defense from the back glass. This is where the round head shines. On balls dug out of the corner, more of the face was under the ball, and my defensive lobs landed deep with a smooth, predictable trajectory. I framed nothing in 90 minutes, which I cannot say for any diamond.

Session three: volleys and blocks. The 3K carbon face feels crisp without being harsh. Low volleys stayed low, and I could angle the ball into the side glass with a small wrist movement. The medium X-EVA core gives a little more feedback than the hard-core Technical, so touch volleys and drop volleys were easier to judge.

Session four: bandeja and víbora. The new textured surface on the 2.6 gripped the ball well. My bandejas were deep and controlled, the shot this racket was built for. The víbora had enough spin to stay low off the side wall, though a diamond still gives more bite.

Session five: attacking overheads. The Counter Viper will not win a smash contest. Flat smashes got to the back glass with pace but rarely out of the court. Kick smashes were decent. If most of your points end with you smashing the ball over the fence, this is the wrong frame.

Session six: verdict and arm check. My arm felt comfortable after a two-hour session. For a control player, the Counter Viper 2.6 is the most complete Babolat I have tested: forgiving on defense, precise at the net, and still firm enough to finish a volley.

One more note from the notebook. In the final week I lent the racket to two students for a set each. The first, a right-side attacker, handed it back after ten minutes because he missed the extra smash pace of his diamond. The second, a steady left-side player who rarely smashes out, did not want to give it back. That split is the clearest summary of who this racket is for.

Babolat Counter Viper Versions Explained

We carry three generations. On the manufacturer spec sheets they are remarkably close, which is good news for anyone buying on a budget.

Counter Viper 2024. Round shape, 355 - 375 g, high balance, 3K carbon face with a rough, medium surface, medium X-EVA core, rated for competition. The Counter Viper 2024 ($219) is the value choice.

Counter Viper 2.5 2025. The same listed shape, weight range, balance, face, surface and core as the 2024. The Counter Viper 2.5 2025 ($259) carries updated cosmetics and is a good middle option.

Counter Viper 2.6 2026. Round, 355 - 375 g, high balance, 3K carbon face, medium X-EVA core, but the surface changes to textured and medium. In my testing that surface gave slightly better grip on slice. The Counter Viper 2.6 2026 ($279) is the one I played above.

The 2026 specs are therefore round, 355 - 375 g, high balance, 38 mm frame, carbon fiber frame, 3K face, textured medium surface and medium X-EVA core. If you see a Counter Viper advertised with specs very different from these, or at a price far below every other seller, be cautious. Counterfeit rackets exist, and my guide on how to check a padel store lists what to look for before you buy.

Who Should Buy the Counter Viper, and How to Set It Up

  1. Buy it if you defend more than you attack. Left-side players who handle most of the back-glass work get the most from the round head.
  2. Buy it if a diamond keeps letting you down. If you frame lobs or lose control of the bandeja, the Counter Viper keeps the Viper feel with a friendlier sweet spot. My racket shapes guide explains why.
  3. Skip it if you are a true beginner. The spec sheet rates it for competition players. The Counter Veron 2.6 2026 ($279) is rated beginner to improver and is the better first racket; see my best beginner rackets.
  4. Choose your generation by budget. The 2024 and 2.5 are near-identical on paper. Pay for the 2.6 only if you want the textured surface.
  5. Set up the grip first. Add one overgrip and test for two sessions. Round frames reward a relaxed grip, so do not overbuild the handle.
  6. Keep it stock. The high balance already gives the ball weight. I would not add lead tape to a Counter Viper unless a coach has watched you play.

Babolat Counter Viper vs the Alternatives

This table puts the three Counter Viper generations next to Babolat's softer Counter Veron and the NOX ML10 round frame. Values come from the manufacturer spec sheets on our product pages.

Model Shape Weight Balance Face Core Player level Price at Padelnox
Counter Viper 2.6 2026 Round 355 - 375 g High 3K carbon fiber X-EVA multilayered densities, medium Competition $279
Counter Viper 2.5 2025 Round 355 - 375 g High 3K carbon fiber X-EVA multilayered densities, medium Competition $259
Counter Viper 2024 Round 355 - 375 g High 3K carbon fiber X-EVA multilayered densities, medium Competition $219
Counter Veron 2.6 2026 Round 355 - 375 g High Carbon Flex Black EVA, medium Beginner to improver $279
Counter Veron 2025 Round 355 - 375 g High Carbon Flex EVA, soft Amateur $249
NOX ML10 Pro Cup 3K 2024 Round 360 - 375 g Low 3K carbon fiber HR3, medium Beginner to competition $239

The Counter Veron swaps the carbon face for Carbon Flex, a carbon and fiberglass mix, which makes it softer and easier. The Counter Veron 2025 ($249) is the gentlest of all, with a soft EVA core. The NOX ML10 Pro Cup 3K 2024 ($239) lists a low balance, so it feels lighter in the head than any Counter Viper; players who want the most manoeuvrable control frame should compare it, and my NOX ML10 guide covers the full line including the ML10 Ventus Control 3K Miguel Lamperti 2026 ($329). The Viper vs Veron comparison explains the Babolat family split in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Babolat Counter Viper good for beginners?

Not really. Every Counter Viper spec sheet rates it for competition players, and its 3K carbon face and high balance reward a trained swing. The round head does make it more forgiving than a diamond, so a fast-improving player can grow into it. For a first racket, I recommend the Counter Veron 2.6 2026, which is rated beginner to improver and uses a softer Carbon Flex face.

What is the difference between the Counter Viper 2.5 and 2.6?

On the manufacturer spec sheets, very little. Both list a round shape, 355 - 375 g, high balance, a 3K carbon face and a medium X-EVA core. The main listed change is the surface: rough and medium on the 2.5, textured and medium on the 2.6. In my testing, the 2.6 gripped slice a touch better. Cosmetics also change between years. If budget matters, the 2.5 is an easy recommendation.

How can I avoid a fake Babolat Counter Viper?

Buy from a seller that inspects stock, ships tracked and accepts returns, and be wary of prices far below other stores. Check that the listed specs match Babolat's own: round shape, 355 - 375 g, 3K carbon face and X-EVA core. On arrival, look for clean paint edges, sharp graphics and a well-fitted grip cap. Every Counter Viper we sell is genuine stock checked before it ships.
